West Bank and Gaza
In the UN partition plan of 1947, an area west of the Jordan River (West Bank / West Bank) and a strip of land on the Mediterranean (Gaza) were designated as an independent Palestinian Arab state.

After the end of the war waged by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon in 1948 – 1949 to destroy the newly founded state of Israel, the West Bank was controlled by Jordan and the Gaza Strip by Egypt. Both territories were conquered by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967. All peace initiatives since then to establish a separate Palestinian state have been rejected by the Palestinian leaders. Today, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) exercises civilian control in the West Bank, while the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas has been in control of the Gaza Strip since 2007.
